HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — In its investigation into several vehicle break-ins at area hiking trails, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has released a photo of a man they believe is involved.

There is one case in particular, from April 9, that the man is suspected to have been the perpetrator. That break-in took place at the Hollow Rock Nature Park, which is northeast of Chapel Hill and west of Durham, off of Erwin Road.

The sheriff’s office said the man, photographed along with his vehicle, stands approximately six feet, two inches tall with a medium build. The vehicle appears to be a black 2001-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe with tinted windows.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, another hiker at the same park reported a vehicle break-in. That hiker provided a suspect vehicle photo which investigators said matches the same black Tahoe.

Also on Tuesday, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., even more trail users reported similar incidents at nearby nature areas. Those included the Johnston Nature Preserve on Turkey Farm Road and the New Hope Creek Trail on Mt. Sinai Road.

Given the incidents were reported in close proximity of both time and location, investigators said they “consider it likely that all occurrences are related.”

Anyone who recognizes the man or spots a similar vehicle at area trails and nature parks is asked to contact Investigator Stewart at (919)245-2925.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office also urged all hikers to leave their valuables at home when heading out on the trails.

“Thieves often steal the purses or wallets people place or conceal in their vehicles while hiking,” investigators said.

Any victim of a theft involving a credit or debit card should cancel the card and contact their bank or credit bureau immediately.
