The Clorox Company Becomes Signatory to United Nations Global Compact


/EINPresswire.com/ -- OAKLAND, CA--(Marketwired - October 26, 2015) - The Clorox Company (NYSE: CLX) announced today it has become a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world's largest corporate responsibility (CR) initiative. Signatories pledge to support and promote 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.

"Corporate responsibility has been a cornerstone of our company since our founding in 1913, and we look forward to working with other like-minded companies and organizations to support the UN's 10 principles," said Clorox CEO Benno Dorer. "Through our CR Strategy and 2020 goals, we will continue to make sustainability core to how we do business."

Clorox was also recently recognized with a 2015 Global Citizen Award from the United Nations Association's East Bay chapter. The company received the award for its strong environmental management record and commitment to corporate responsibility, which aligns with many of the United Nation's Millennium and Sustainable Development Goals.

Since 2008, Clorox has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent, water usage by 23 percent, energy usage by 12 percent and waste to landfill by 50 percent on a per-case basis. Clorox has also made sustainability improvements to more than 50 percent of its product portfolio since 2008.1 In 2012, Clorox set new goals to reduce its footprint in GHG emissions, water and energy usage, and waste to landfill by 20 percent each on a per-case-sold basis, as well as make sustainability improvements to 50 percent of its portfolio, by 2020.

Among the company's many corporate responsibility initiatives, since 2012, the Clorox Safe Water program has provided public bleach dispensers to help safely disinfect drinking water in rural Peru, while also teaching the importance of safe water and good hygiene. Over the next four years, the program will provide more than 100 million liters of safe drinking water annually to 25,000 people.

In the past three years, Clorox has provided cash and product donations to aid in disaster relief in Costa Rica, the Philippines, Nepal, Japan, Haiti, Canada and the U.S. The company has also donated Clorox® regular bleach to help fight the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and Liberia, the Chikungunya virus in the Caribbean and the H1N1 flu in Mexico.
